Modern design Barclays Center by Shop Architects
Bruce Ratner originally assigned Frank Gehry the task of designing the basketball arena for Atlantic Yard, a development of 90,000 m2 in Brooklyn. The idea of Gehry outlined a sand surrounded by buildings that were categorized in different areas and carefully reassembled lue to create “urban surprising moments.” When Gehry was fired a few months ago and replaced by the firm Ellerbe Becket Kansas, many were concerned that the project would be done with the care that Gehry had given him. When the original design of Becket was considered of poor quality, quickly hired Ratner SHoP Architects to get a design to match.
Finally, the design of Barclays CenterWhich incorporates some original ideas of Gehry, achieves a remarkable balance between the iconic shape and commitment to public space. It is readable at multiple scales, while maintaining an identity that delights visitors, neighbors, fans and spectators. Integrated in one of the busiest intersections in the new urban New York metropolitan area, the Center will contain a healthy dialogue and interactive with the surrounding streets and neighborhoods.
The gesture Civic Sand is increased by a spectacular cover 9 meters high, containing an oculus that frames the view of the Arena. The main public access linking the Atlantic and the Square Flatbush AvenueAnd creates a flexible system, a civic space as a great welcome.
The main public access is predominantly of glass on the sidewalk level, the best way to ensure the accessibility and visibility.
The views and physical access, both inside and outside the Arena will be a common factor, clear and pleasing, thus ensuring a strong connection to the surrounding urban environment.
Initially, the project, but consisted of many parts, was designed as a great system. To defer additional costs, Ratner split design. This worried many who felt that once built the arena, it could be years before the rest of the project was near completion. According to Ratner, once the arena, the foundations for residential buildings and will comercailes Cabadas and, being ready to begin the next phase of construction. It is important for maintaining the overall design constant progress, since the sum of the elements is more important than the arena itself.
The following is a model project for the original set designed by Frank Gehry.
