The UAE pavilion by Norman Foster
Soft as a sand dune, the UAE pavilion designed by Norman Foster ‘sExpo 2010 in Shanghai shows off her curved geometry surrounded by a “golden shell.”
The precious skin steel, treated to achieve a golden, embodies the “shell-jewel with a rough finish on the side that supports the wind, and polished on one side. Porous side facing north in order to allow the entry of natural light, the facade looks more solid and uniform in the south for better protection from the sun.
The complex structure consists of a triangular grid panels designed by steel plates together in adjustable points, designed to be able to remove the pavilion site, done quickly and cheaply.
The pavilion reaches the maximum height of 20 meters and can accommodate up to 450 seats, occupying a total area of 3 thousand square meters.
The entry of natural light is through the vertical glass cuts and night light inside the structure.
“The cities of the UAE – says Gerard Evenden senior partner of Foster – rising from the desert. Similarly, the pavilion will be developed to form a natural counterpoint in the cityscape of Shanghai. As a sand dune, is oriented in the direction of the wind and is an example of environmental architecture and organic passive. “
